Jason, Archangel Raphael's spymaster, is an enigma literally wrapped in shadows. When Archangel Neha’s consort, Eris, is murdered in the palace in which he was imprisoned by Neha for three hundred years, Jason must step forward to solve the mystery. Neha, in love with Eris in spite of his infidelity centuries ago, might lose control of her powers and wreak devastation in her grief and anger if Jason doesn't quickly solve the murder.
In order to gain Neha's trust, Jason must swear a blood vow to Neha's niece, Princess Mahiya. Mahiya is the result of Eris's indiscretion with Neha's sister. And Mahiya has secrets and an agenda of her own.
The main body of Archangel's Storm begins with a gift for fans of the series--the wedding of Dmitri and Honor. The story starts a mere three hours after the close of Archangel's Blade, and we are privileged to attend their beautiful ceremony. Jason receives the news of Eris's death at the wedding and then we're off and running with Archangel's Storm.
Jason is a shadowy spymaster. Not only can he wrap himself in shadows, but he wrapped his past in shadows, too. He arrived at Refuge fully grown and never spoke of his past. No one knows of the tragedy that he lived through and which left him unable to feel emotions, leaving his heart untouched. His story is heartbreaking.
Mahiya is a survivor. She survived three hundred years as Neha's plaything and whipping post, and still maintained her inner core of strength and innocence. Now that Eris is dead and she is no longer of any use to Neha, Mahiya has plans for her life which don't include Neha. But will Jason stand in her way?
The murder mystery will keep you guessing throughout most of the book. You might not solve the crime until Jason and Mahiya do. In any case, the solution is a nice twist.
The relationship between Jason and Mahiya will also keep you guessing. Mahiya calls Jason a storm, a man "who belongs to no one and who will never be tamed." If reading a book can make you cry, then keep the tissues handy. But don't worry. Ultimately, Nalini Singh provides a fulfilling ending. I won't tell you what that ending is, but you'll be satisfied.
We follow Dmitri and Honor intermittently in Archangel's Storm. Due to the nature of their situation, I suspect that we will continue to follow them into the next book. Guild Hunter #6 will be Elena and Raphael's story. It's due to come out in September 2013. I'm looking forward to it!
