Jillian Cardiff came to this remote mountain town to forget the demon attack that almost killed her. Instead, she rescues-and falls for-a gorgeous stranger who has no memory of anything other than his name. Handsome, charming, and protective, Reseph seems like the kind of man whom Jillian can trust. But with hints of a troubling history of his own, he's also the kind of man who can be very dangerous . . .

Reseph may not know why he mysteriously appeared in Jillian's life, but he knows he wants to stay. Yet when Jillian's neighbors are killed, and demon hunters arrive on the scene, Reseph fears that he's putting Jillian in danger. And once it's revealed that Reseph is also Pestilence, the Horseman responsible for ravaging the world, he and Jillian must face the greatest challenge of all: Can they forget the horrors of a chilling past to save the future they both desire?

♥♥♥

At the end of Lethal Rider, the angel Reaver contrived to have Pestilence locked up inside Reseph, instead of having both Pestilence and Reseph killed. Reseph was sent to the demon equivalent of hell to be tortured. Reaver took pity on Reseph, wiped his memory, and sent him back to the human realm. In Rogue Rider Reseph awakes, naked, in the snow in a remote area of Colorado.

Jillian Cardiff finds Reseph and takes him to her cabin, where they are temporarily snowed in. He can't remember anything except his name, but he has disturbing flashes of the person he might have been. Especially when Jillian's neighbors are killed, animals are killed on Jillian's own property, and the killers don't appear to be human. Jillian also flashes back to her old life when her neighbors are killed, as she was once attacked by demons.

Not all is dark, however. Jillian finds herself attracted to the quirky, playful, sexy stranger in her cabin, who quickly weaves his way into her life and makes her feel comfortable and safe. Not that she wants to be protected. She's a brave woman, a true warrior worthy of a Horseman.

"I'm not afraid of you, Reseph." Her level gaze was unwavering, leaving no doubt that she was serious.
"But you don't know who I am."
"I know you're cocky and funny. You're protective and sweet. You're not afraid of hard work. You're strong, but gentle. You can't cook worth a shit."
     "I think I'm offended."
"But you really can't cook," she grumbled.
"I was talking about the 'sweet' part."

Reseph is faced with feelings that he knows he's never experienced before, and he isn't sure he can handle them. He and Jillian agree on commitment-free sex, and yet care, reverence, and emotions come to bed with them.

After searching and not finding anything, Reseph decides that he doesn't want to discover his past. He has what he wants in Jillian, and he wants to make a fresh start. But forces are gathering to find him and turn him back into Pestilence. If he's subjected to evil, Pestilence could return.

Reseph's memories come back, with dire consequences. All the Horsemen are reunited, but it may be too late for forgiveness.

But the ultimate question is whether Jillian can anchor Reseph and prevent Pestilence from taking over again.

♥♥♥

Larissa Ione did a fantastic job of turning a villain into a hero you'll fall in love with from page one. Jillian is a strong heroine who is a match for Reseph, and who can stand up to Pestilence. You'll like her as the heroine.

The book moves along at a good pace. There is mystery, suspense, action, and fighting to keep things going. Not to mention the hot sex.

Favorites from previous books return, including the Horsemen and their families, Kynan, Reaver, and Harvester. There are some amazing revelations that may surprise you. Reaver's story is set up in the last chapter, and the odds are stacked high against him. His story is due to come out in September of 2013. It's already eagerly awaited!

In the meantime, enjoy Rogue Rider

From the author:

A TIME FOR WAR…
A casualty of the war between the demons and the vampires, Jase Kayrs has been missing for six long years. His older brothers want answers—but they’re going to have to get them from an unlikely source. For when Kane Kayrs tracks down Amber Freebird, what he finds is a blonde, vegan pacifist who has no intention of using her skills in his war…

A TIME FOR LOVE…
Amber enjoys her life of chaotic freedom and has no intention of falling in line just because a sexy-as-sin vampire insists on order. Unfortunately, he discovers she may be the only hope they have of finding his brother, and there’s no way he’s going to let her go—even if it means mating her to gain her cooperation. The two are as different as can be, yet when the dominant Kane and the untamed Amber finally unite to rescue Jase, they just may find that opposites really do attract…

♥♥♥

Kane Kayrs's brother Jase has been imprisoned by demons and tortured--physically and mentally--for four years when Provoked opens. The Kayrs brothers need a demon destroyer to help rescue him, but they believe they are extinct. Until their trackers find the only known demon destroyer in existence. Kane--the brilliant, logical, socially challenged brother--has been given the task of retrieving her.

Amber Freebird has been raised in an eco-village as a vegan pacifist and doesn't know that vampires and demons exist, let alone that she's a demon destroyer. When Kane talks to her about vampires and demons, she thinks he's crazy and tries to escape him. But when demons attack, she has no choice but to believe her own eyes. When her grandmother is threatened, she agrees to help Kane in exchange for her grandmother's safety. But can they find Jase before he succumbs to the demons' torture?

As they work together, Amber begins to fall for the sexy vampire. She believes in love and romance. Kane wants to mate her, but he doesn't believe in love. How can they ever find happiness with such a disparity?

 ♥♥♥

"I'm all brain, no heart."
Kane is a genius, yet he doesn't understand the way Amber makes him feel. He stubbornly approaches his relationship with Amber rationally, like a business decision. The genius has a lot to learn. You'll love him for it. Rationally, of course.

"This isn't about thinking. This is about feeling."
Amber reads romance novels, and believes in love and that heroines create their own happy endings. Kane thinks "She's smart, sexy, and dedicated to what she believes in." She believes in pacifism, and yet she finds herself in the middle of a war.

Janie, Zane and Kalin's story continues in Provoked. Janie is now twenty, and old enough to start making decisions that will affect the fate of the world. Zane is as sexy and mysterious as ever. Kalin is a very bad boy who rides the knife-edge of redemption.

Provoked is a page-turner. I could never find a good place to put the book down, so I kept reading and reading. I laughed, I cried, I was anxious for them to find Jase before it was too late, and I desperately wanted Kane and Amber to be happy.

I won't tell you whose book is next, as that would spoil the ending of Provoked. Suffice it to say that we have a good story to look forward to. Look for an official announcement of the next book within the next month of this posting.

In the meantime, enjoy Provoked!

From the publisher:

GRYPHON—Honorable, loyal, dependable...tainted. He was the ultimate warrior before imprisonment in the Underworld changed him in ways he can't ignore.

She calls to him. Come to me. You can't resist. But Gryphon will not allow himself to be ruled by the insidious whispers in his head. And there's only one way to stop them: kill Atalanta, the goddess who enslaved him. But with so much darkness inside, he can't be sure what's real anymore. Even the Eternal Guardians, those who protect the human realms and the gods, want to exile him.

Finding Malea is like a miracle. Somehow he doesn't feel the pull of the dark when she's near. And he's determined to keep her as near as possible, whether she wants him close or not. But she's a temptation that will test every bit of control he has left. One that may ultimately have the power to send him back to the Underworld...or free him from his chains for good.

♥♥♥

" . . .everything she knew about Gryphon screamed nut job."

Ever since Gryphon's brother, Orpheus, rescued him from the Underworld (Enraptured), Gryphon has been hearing dark Atalanta's voice calling to him to her. Constantly. Making him want to twitch and scream. The Argonauts don't know what to do with him, and so they've hidden him away in the half-breeds' colony to "recover." On his first mission since his rescue, the darkness inside him takes over, with grave consequences. In the aftermath, he needs to escape the colony. And he knows exactly who can guide him, because he's been watching her at night.

Maelea, daughter of Persephone and Zeus, has been kept "safe" at the colony even longer than Gryphon. She has been planning her escape because Hades is hunting her. The colony is not safe with her in it. On the night she attempts her getaway, Gryphon intercepts her. He ends up kidnapping her when he realizes that she calms Atalanta's voice inside his head. Maelea is his means to an end. Their escape is rough and dangerous, and the they are at odds with each other. But if they don't work together, they won't survive. As they begin to help each other, their desire and attraction grow. But can she trust the man who kidnapped her? And can he trust the daughter of the über manipulative Persephone, the wife of Hades?

♥♥♥

"But he didn't feel like a crazy man to her . . ."

Gryphon is the ultimate tortured hero. Literally. He was tortured in the Underworld and came out a broken man, enslaved to Atalanta. He figures that his days as an Argonaut are over. What he doesn't realize is that deep down he is still an Argonaut. Maelea, alone of all of those around him, recognizes that the honorable Argonaut Gryphon is still deep down inside him.

The light side of Maelea--her father's side--interferes with the voice in Gryphon's head and therefore with Atalanta's ability to summon him. She is all that stands between him and insanity. He calls her his sotiria, his salvation.

Maelea is a strong woman, though one who can't step on spiders. She picks them up and puts them outside, instead. When faced with deadly creatures larger than spiders, she ... well, I won't spoil it for you.

Throughout the book, Gryphon's goal is to find Atalanta and destroy her, freeing himself from his slavery to her. Maelea's goal is to earn her way into Olympus, thus leaving the earthly world behind. If Gryphon seeks Atalanta, he risks being killed--or worse. If Maelea achieves her goal, she'll never see Gryphon again. Can there be a happy ending for them?

The story arc of the Orb of Krónos continues in Enslaved, and has disastrous consequences for Gryphon, Maelea, and some favorite characters from previous books. The end of Enslaved is a game-changer for the series.

Eternal Guardians #6 will be Titus's story, tentatively titled ScorchedWe get an intriguing introduction to the story in Enslaved. It will be out in March, 2013, which seems too long to wait.

Review of ABSOLUTION by Susannah Sandlin

The Penton Legacy, #2

From the publisher:

With the vampire world on the brink of civil war over the scarcity of untainted human blood, battle lines are being drawn between the once peaceful vampire and human enclave of Penton, Alabama, and the powerful Vampire Tribunal. Mirren Kincaid once served the tribunal as their most creative and ruthless executioner—a time when he was known as the Slayer. But when assigned a killing he found questionable, Mirren abandoned the tribunal’s political machinations and disappeared—only to resurface two centuries later as the protector and second-in-command of Penton. Now the tribunal wants him back on their side. To break their rogue agent, they capture Glory Cummings, the descendant of a shaman, and send her to restore Mirren’s bloodthirsty nature. But instead of a monster, Glory sees a man burdened by the weight of his past. Could her magic touch—meant by the tribunal to bring out a violent killer— actually help Mirren break his bonds and discover the love he doesn't believe he deserves?

♥♥♥

"...there were starving vampires, crazy vampire politicians, and vampire pacifists."

For the uninitiated here's a little Penton Legacy background. A viral pandemic swept through the human population, leading to the development of a vaccine. Unfortunately, the vaccine made the blood of humans poisonous to vampires. Unvaccinated humans are scarce, and vampires are hungry.

Aidan Murphy--the hero of Redemption--founded the town of Penton to solve this problem for his scathe, or vampire community. Penton, Alabama, consists of vampires and their unvaccinated humans who are willingly bonded to them. All the town members want is to live in peace. But the Vampire Tribunal, whose hungry members only understand power machinations, have their distrustful eyes on Penton.

Mirren Kincaid was an assassin, the Slayer, for the Tribunal until he received one morally reprehensible assignment too many. He faked his own death and eventually became the bad-ass, second-in-command of Penton. While away from Penton, he is kidnapped by the men of a vicious, calculating Tribunal member, Matthias Ludlam.

Matthias discovers a human with unknown special powers, Glory Cummings. He kidnaps her and attempts to get her to reveal the nature of her powers. When she doesn't, he throws her into the cell with Mirren, who has been starving for a month. Matthias hopes that Mirren will kill Glory, thus turning Mirren back into the Slayer.

Mirren doesn't kill Glory, and when he is rescued he insists on taking Glory with him to Penton. He is unwillingly made  responsible for her. Against his better judgment, he is drawn to the straight-talking human who barges her way into his sequestered life. Glory is attracted to the man she sees beneath the forbidding facade he shows to the world. Mirren tries to scare her away, but she isn't running.

But Matthias isn't finished with his grab for power, and Glory is on his hit list since she is a "loose end." Other members of the Tribunal get involved in a power struggle that has grave consequences for Mirren, Glory, and Penton. Will Glory and Mirren survive, let alone find happiness together?

♥♥♥

Glory is "Somebody who doesn't know [Mirren's] past, who isn't afraid of him, who sees behind the asshole he tries to be, who can break down those walls of crabbitude he puts around himself." Instead of seeing a killer in Mirren, she sees a protector. She sees a person who judges himself harshly and finds himself lacking.  She sees a man she understands, a man she can soothe, a man she can love.

In Glory, Mirren sees a woman who is "full of life and spirit and joy, even after all the things Matthias had done to her." He also sees an independent woman who babbles when she's nervous.

Speaking of babbling, you'll enjoy the back-and-forth between Mirren and Glory when she babbles and annoys him. Another running joke is her calling him on the carpet for swearing, but ... hell, you'll see.

Not all is chocolates and roses. Mirren and Glory bring a deadly fight to Penton that will have you hooked and turning the pages as fast as you can. Prepare yourself, because Susannah Sandlin doesn't pull her punches. But don't let that stop you from reading this excellent book.

One character I quoted but haven't mentioned is Will Ludlam, Matthias's son and a lieutenant in Penton. Matthias is determined to regain control of his son, and Will is just as determined to remain loyal to Aidan Murphy. We see some of Matthias's play for Will in Absolution, and also the beginning of Will's relationship with another lieutenant, Randa. The next Penton Legacy book, Omega, is Will and Randa's story. I can't wait to visit Penton again.

Enjoy Absolution!

From the Publisher:

Collared and controlled, Shifters are outcast from humanity, forced to live in Shiftertowns. But waiting within are passions that no Collar can contain…

As a wildcat Shifter and leader of his Shiftertown, Eric Warden knows his own kind. When he sees Iona Duncan, he realizes that although she appears human she is a half-Shifter wildcat living without a Collar—and that if she doesn’t acknowledge her true nature and her mating hunger, it may kill her….

Iona finds the mysterious and powerful Eric alluring, even though she has vowed never to reveal her Shifter side, lest her mother pay the price for hiding her all these years. But her mating hunger is rising, and with Eric so close, she may not be able to resist…and her desire may lead to the very doom they are fighting to deny…

♥♥♥

When leopard shifter Eric Warden met Iona Duncan, he knew right away that she was a half-shifter trying to pass herself off as human. For Iona, as much as she was attracted to the sexy Las Vegas Shiftertown leader, she didn't want anything to do with him. To come out as a Shifter would ruin her happy human life and get her mother into trouble for keeping her secret. But Iona is in her mating frenzy and in danger of going feral if she doesn't give in to her true nature. Eric has to convince her to embrace her shifter side ... and become his mate.

Before Eric can convince Iona, they are threatened when the human government forces a Feline-hating Lupine clan leader on Shiftertown. Add to that a baffling illness that debilitates Eric, a secret building in the desert, and missing wolf-shifters, and you've got suspense, danger, action, and mystery. "And in the middle of all of this, a young, fertile female with the rising need to mate was running around loose and unprotected."

You'll love the characters of Eric and Iona. Iona is a smart woman who cleverly stands up to the Lupine leader. Eric sees her as a strong fighter and protector. More than that, she's the mate of his heart. Eric is everything a good alpha should be. He "had dominance down to an art form." "[Iona had] seen the seductive lover, the vicious fighter, the man suffering, and the protector." Oh, and did I mention that he's HOT? The scene in Iona's back hallway during the bachlorette party is ... something you don't want to miss.

Some secondary characters grow throughout the book, and by the end you'll be anxious for books about them. I won't name names, as that would spoil things for you. It's no secret, though, that the next book is Tiger Magic, which is coming out in June 2013.

From the Publisher:

For centuries, the shape-shifting dragon warriors known as the Pyr have hidden themselves from mankind, defending the earth’s treasures in secrecy. But as the final reckoning with the Slayers—who are determined to eradicate both humans and the Pyr who protect them—heats up, even the most ancient secrets will be revealed.…

Brandon Merrick is determined to banish his shifter nature forever. The charismatic tattooed surfer is on the cusp of the ultimate challenge—to prove himself on the whitecaps of Hawaii and secure his future as a pro surfer. But his dragon isn’t prepared to be tamed so easily....

One look at marine biologist Liz Barrett ignites the spark of a firestorm: Liz is his destined mate and his chance for happiness. While Brandon sees their first night together as just the beginning, his dragon seizes the upper hand. Awakening in the company of a raging dragon challenges Liz’s ability to believe her own eyes. Can Brandon accept his inner beast in time to make it work with Liz?

Neither one realizes Brandon is caught in an ancient Slayer’s scheme to enslave him. When the deadly plot ignites, the very island will be at risk...and Brandon and his mate could be the ultimate sacrifice.

♥♥♥

Brandon Merrick grew up believing that his dragon side was a monster. Now estranged from his family, he wants nothing more than to conquer the darkness within him, to eradicate the dragon from his life. His goal is to become a pro surfer, since the water element seems to calm him. To that end, he cooperates with Chen, an elderly friend of his who says he can help him control his dragon. But does Chen have Brandon's best interests at heart? Is there more to Chen than Brandon sees?

Liz Barrett is a marine biologist who believes she's put her own past behind her, having given away her Firedaughter witch powers fourteen years ago. But when she arrives in Hawaii for a symposium, her powers begin to return. And when she meets up with Brandon under a lunar eclipse, their firestorm--their fated mating--sparks into flames. After a night of passion, an unnatural earthquake releases Brandon's dragon. Although Brandon doesn't tell Liz that he is the dragon, she starts putting clues together to figure out that he's a Pyr. But she's also holding back on Brandon. They both have secrets that they're hiding, and they both can't accept their true selves.

The Pyr race to Brandon's side, welcomed by Brandon or not, as Chen makes his true nature known. An additional enemy arrives on the scene, complicating matters for all. The lives of Brandon and Liz--and the safety of the island of Oahu--are on the line unless they can accept and control their true natures. Will they succeed?

♥♥♥

Brandon and Liz are likable characters that you'll enjoy spending hours with. They aren't perfect--like real people they have their flaws. But Brandon is noble, loyal, and protective. Liz is caring, nurturing, and loving. But she can also kick some dragon butt.

After the story is established, there is plenty of suspense and fast-paced action. Both Brandon and Liz find themselves in mortal danger.  But when all is said and done, Ember's Kiss is a story of self-acceptance and forgiveness.

As a jaguar he is graceful and gorgeous...

A year ago, Army Capt. Kathleen McKnight was on a mission to take down a drug cartel in the Amazon rain forest. She was mortally wounded and the rest of her team was killed. Connor Anderson arrived on the scene, and so did a jaguar that she heard but didn't see. Connor saved saved her life and then disappeared back into the rain forest, along with his "pet" jaguar.

Connor Anderson and his sister Maya are born jaguar shifters, the only shifters aside from their estranged family that they know of. They regularly visit the Amazon rain forest to get back to their roots and to run in their jaguar coats. A year after saving "Kat," Connor still has not forgotten her. And Kat has not forgotten him.

Suffering from PTSD, Kat returns to the rain forest to try to find Connor, to thank him for saving her life. She gets hopelessly lost and is found by two jaguars--Connor and Maya in their jaguar forms. Connor rescues her in his human form, and can't believe that Kat has returned to him.

As a consequence of being the only jaguar-shifters that they know of, Connor and Maya have no prospects of finding mates. Maya recognizes the attraction between Connor and Kat, and takes a drastic measure to get them together.

"The more [Connor] knew about [Kat] and her past, the more mired in trouble they were all becoming."

Kat's past is following her, and they are all put in mortal danger. The race for their lives through the jungle, and additional complications are brought on by Maya's duplicity. Not all mysteries are tied up neatly in the end, probably leading into the next book. Jaguar Fever will be out in August, 2013.

Terry Spear fans, rejoice! She has done for jaguar-shifters what she did for wolf-shifters. She thoroughly researched jaguars and their habits and incorporated that research into accurately portraying her jaguar-shifters. Her Amazon rain forest is also richly described. You will feel the humidity against your skin, smell the lush vegetation, and hear the howler monkeys in the trees. She transports you to the predatory, magical, tropical world of jaguar-shifters.
