History and Recap
Five thousand years ago, the angel Verrine fell in love with the angel Yenrieth. The relationship ended badly after Yenrieth fathered the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse with a succubus. Yenrieth's face was wiped from Verrine's memory, and Yenrieth's memory was completely wiped clean so that he could have a second chance.

Verrine made a vow to watch over Yenrieth's children since he couldn't. To that end, she became a fallen angel. Eventually, she became the Sheoulic Watcher of the Horsemen. She became the cynical, sometimes cruel, Harvester. Ultimately, she watched over the Horsemen opposite their Heavenly Watcher, Reaver.  They had a lust/hate relationship.

Reaver couldn't remember more than the past thirty years of his life, but then some of his memories were returned to him. He discovered that he was Yenrieth. Father of the Horsemen.

Then Harvester was betrayed as the Heavenly spy she was. She was condemned by Satan to suffer an eternity of torture in Sheoul.

When Reaver discovered that Harvester was actually a fallen hero, he vowed to rescue her from Sheoul.

Even though—if he survived—it would cost him his wings.

Or worse.

Reactions
Yenreith was a bit of a jerk. Reaver is an angel to fall in love with. He's powerful, loyal, commanding, and has a hard body to wrap around. When he says to Harvester "… we're done … going through the bullshit," you want to stand up and cheer. He's also gentle, protective, and self-sacrificial. He's the perfect combination of hard and soft.

Harvester, the villain throughout the Lords of Deliverance novels, could have been a hard sell as a heroine. But Larissa Ione pulls it off very well, making her a sympathetic character as soon as she's introduced in Reaver. And you'll feel for her when you learn the extent of what Yenrieth did to her. You'll understand her motivations throughout Lords when you learn her backstory. But Ione is smart enough to know that we won't buy a complete turnaround for Harvester. She retains much of her snarky personality. This time, however, we like her for it.

Fans of Demonica will be happy to know that Eidolon and Wraith make appearances. They both have some great lines with Reaver. Wraith, especially, is hilarious. Limos plays a part in the plot, and Arik, Ares, Thanatos, and Reseph are all in the book.

Suspense, mystery, betrayals, and revelations keep the plot moving along at a fast pace. Ione has a talent for putting her characters into impossible situations that will have you holding your breath.

In the end, Reaver is a poignant story of a love/hate relationship forgotten and then remembered. With far different results.

Thank goodness.

A game-changing truth is revealed about the Sheoulic Watcher Revenant. His book, Revenant, is up next.

Until then, enjoy Reaver!

PRINCE OF SHADOWS by Tes Hilaire is Highly Recommended

Prince of Shadows

(Paladin Warriors, #3)

by Tes Hilaire

Cover: Prince of Shadows by Tes Hilaire
Rating: 4.5♥s Excellent / Highly Recommended
Audience: Adult
Sensuality: Hot
Length: Novel
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: December 3, 2013

My recap:

Valin is a Paladin, one of His Warriors. He protects humans from the evil that they aren't aware of and aren't capable of fighting.

Valin is the black sheep among the Warriors. He manipulates shadows to travel, whereas the Paladins are all about God's Light.

Gabriella is a mixed-breed, part-succubus vampire. Valin was attracted to her from the moment he met her. He went a bit crazy when he thought she'd died.

In Prince of Shadows, Valin catches a glimpse of her with a group of part-blood humans that she's training. And he sees a stain of evil on her soul that hadn't been there before. He's determined to remove that stain.

Because she is his.

But her vampire sire has other ideas.

My thoughts:

Valin is an alpha hero who is dark and deadly, and has a tragic past. But he's also protective of Gabby and even tender and vulnerable with her. And he's not about to let her go now that he's found her again. He'd do anything for her. And it does come down to "anything" in a fateful conclusion.

Gabby is a kick-butt heroine. But she feels unworthy of a Paladin because of her succubus mother and her vampire sire. Her biological father—whose identity she keeps to herself—inspires her to do what is right. But her insecurities keep her from succumbing to her love for Valin.

There are two secondary characters, Bennett and Annie, whose story is started in Prince of Shadows. Bennett begins to fall for Annie, kicking and screaming the whole way. It's fun to watch. I won't spoil things by telling you what happens, but suffice it to say that their story will continue in a later book. But not the next one. We'll have to wait a while for their HEA, according to Tes Hilaire.

Prince of Shadows is a hot book. Valin emphasizes making love verses having sex. Gabby wants to have sex without making love. In any case, the few love/sex scenes in the book are real scorchers. (Is it hot in here?)

The pace of the book is quick. From Valin's desperate bid to find Gabby to his desperate bid to keep her, you'll be turning the pages in between as fast as you can possibly read them.

Prince of Shadows is an excellent addition to the Paladin Warriors series. It can be read as a standalone book. However, the story arc will make more sense and be more enjoyable if it's read as a part of the series. Note: The timeline of Prince of Shadows runs concurrently with a portion of Deliver Me From Temptation, and ends before Temptation ends. Therefore, references to Temptation do not include the conclusion of that book.

The books in the series are listed below.  Tes says that there will be more Paladin Warriors novels in the future, though she has no release dates yet. We have something to look forward to!

Happy reading!

SOUL CHASE by Anne Hope Earns 4.5♥s

Soul Chase

(Dark Souls, #3)

by Anne Hope

Soul Chase by Anne Hope
Rating: 4.5♥s Excellent / Highly Recommended
Audience: Adult
Sensuality: Mild
Length: Novel
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: November 26, 2013

The World of Dark Souls
Anne Hope's books are unique in the paranormal romance genre. She has built a complex world encompassing Fallen Angels, Nephilim, soulless Watchers who protect humanity, Kleptopsychs who ingest souls, and soulless Rogues who belong in neither camp.

Although the world of Dark Souls can be complicated, it really all boils down to the basics of good storytelling. Her books are about compelling heroes, strong heroines, and insurmountable odds. They grab you, don't let you go, and stay with you long after you've read The End.

Read on for a review of Soul Chase.

Love Lost
Adrian has been mourning the loss of his love, Angie, for twenty-five years. (Read their story in Soul Thief.) He's just been going through the motions without her.

And Found
When a series of suspicious abductions comes to his attention, he tracks down the young woman who escaped the latest abduction attempt.

It's Angie.

No, it's Emma. Who looks remarkably like Angie. And who has been dreaming of a man named Adrian all her life.

Emma is Angie, reincarnated.

But Emma is also special to the world of the Watchers, and the Kleptopsychs will stop at nothing to get her soul.

But Adrian refuses to lose her again.

A Poignant Story
I fell in love with Adrian in Soul Thief. He's protective and driven by his heart and his conscience, in spite of the fact that he doesn't have a soul. Your heart reaches out to him. You want him to finally be happy and at peace.

Emma is a heroine who has had a tough life running from the Kleptopsychs. She feels it has made her weak, because she's spent her life in hiding. But it has only made her stronger. She has the greater journey in this story, having to come to terms with many mind-bending, life-altering truths.

Romantic suspense tightens the story. Emma falls for Adrian. But how will she feel if Adrian loves the dead woman he sees in her, not Emma? Action heightens the suspense. Emma's mother is held hostage by the Kleptopsychs, leading to a dangerous and deadly mission to find her location. You'll stay up late to find out what happens.

Love lost and found, significant revelations, betrayal, great loss, and reconciliation all add up to a page-turner and a poignant love story. The ending is rewarding, and takes the story arc in a new direction. Don't miss it!

Enjoy!

My recap:

Passionate Hate …

Harpy Sentinel Aryal is convinced that new Sentinel Quentin Caeravorn is a criminal. She has investigated him for two years, but has been unable to pin anything on him. She takes every opportunity she can to fight with him.

Quentin has reached his limit with Aryal's harassment. But he and Aryal have one fight too many. Dragos has had enough. He sends them together on a mission to the dead Elven land of Numenlaur.

They vow to kill each other.

Turns Into Passion

When forced together, passionate hate turns to explosive passion. But can they work together to defend the Wyr from a deadly threat?

My thoughts:

Thea Harrison faced a tough job taking an unsympathetic character, Aryal, and turning her into a heroine. She succeeded beautifully. This in spite of the fact that in the opening scene Aryal hates two characters I've always liked, Pia and Quentin. But Harrison first wins me over when Aryal ends up falling to the Power of the peanut. And then throughout the book we end up seeing a side of her that we've never seen before. I'm not going to go overboard, though. All is not hearts and butterflies. She is and will always be brash and abrasive. But we can now love her for it.

Quentin's character takes a turn for the worse when he's around Aryal. We discover that he has a side to him that doesn't pull a punch in a fight against a woman. But when he pushes her in the end, we love him for it.

Oh, and he's dead sexy.

And a bit twisted. But I'll let you discover that for yourself.

The book moves along quickly, with suspense, mystery, sexual tension, passion, and mortal danger all crammed onto the pages. It's a page-turner that you won't want to put down. I was sorry to see the book end, but I loved the last scene. It's a delightful parallel to Aryal's opening scene, and you'll fall in love with Quentin all over again.

Kinked can be read as a standalone book. However, you'll enjoy it more if you've read the series. References are made to events in Dragon Bound and Lord's Fall. The series is listed below in reading order.

Happy reading!

 My recap:

War Begins. Love is Tested.

It's the Cascade, a confluence of time and events that leads to a a surge of power in the archangel Cadre. All of the archangels will grow in strength, and some will be touched with madness. War is all but inevitable.

In New York, angels are dropping from the sky and casualties are high. Vampires, normally immune to illness, are dying of a highly contagious disease.

An insidious war against Archangel Raphael and his city has begun. But who is behind it? And how can Raphael and Guild Hunter Elena fight an unknown enemy?

And what is the consequence of the mysterious change that Raphael is undergoing?

My thoughts:

Archangel's Legion includes mystery, suspense, death, and war. But for me, the overriding story arc is the love story between Raphael and Elena. Everything—from their working together to keep New York calm after the Falling to their actions in the end—serves to strengthen their love for each other. All isn't wine and roses. They face serious challenges and threats to their relationship. But even the difficulties make them stronger. Raphael is scary-powerful in this book, and yet he also shines as a lover. Here are some of his sigh-worthy quotes about Elena:
"…he knew he'd damn his own honor and take vengeance on the world should anyone dare lay a finger on her."
"Eternity would mean nothing without you." (Raphael to Elena)
"For no power on earth would I trade my Elena."
Elena is kick-butt, as always. She fights for New York, she fights for the Guild, and she fights for Raphael—literally and figuratively. More than ever, in this book she is the humanizing, compassionate face of the Tower. Her problems with celebrity are hilarious. I want the T-shirt.

Illium, as usual, is irreverent and irrepressible. He's also heroic. Nalini seems to be readying him and Aodhan for their own books.

The meaning of the book's title is a surprise that I won't reveal. It will be interesting to see how that develops.

Archangel's Legion is a story of war, but is also a beautiful love story that will curl your toes and melt your heart.

Enjoy!
