THE QUEEN'S DANCE Excerpt by Jamie K. Schmidt

The Queen's Dance

(Emerging Queens, #3)

Jamie K. Schmidt

Despite his handicaps outside his natural habitat, water dragon Remy “Champ” Champlain fights to protect Queen Margery from those who plot to quash her damaging news reports by silencing her...forever.

He can never have her, but he'll protect her with his life.

After newly shifted sky dragon Queen Margery is rescued from smugglers by water dragon Remy Champlain, she debates whether to flesh out the story that nearly got her killed or embrace her royalty and build a court of protectors and studs. Sparks fly between Remy and her. He’d love her to give up her job and settle down…hopefully with him…but he can’t fly and she can’t swim, so their relationship can never get off the ground.

The healing burn of the sun pinned Margery to the ground. Her eyes wouldn’t open, but she could see the blazing orange from under her lids. She’d been saved. Pressing her cheek against the sun-warmed grass, she took a deep breath of fresh air for the first time in a week. Coughs racked her body. She was still so weak. A tear leaked out of her eye.

“Please don’t cry, chérie. You’re safe here.”

That was the lake dragon. The one who’d helped rescue her. Margery’s hands clutched the ground. She was no longer on the water, trapped in a smuggler’s hold hidden under the deck of a yacht. No longer lying in her own waste, dying a slow and painful death.

“Where am I?” she asked, her words coming out as a strangled whisper.

“You’re at my home in North Hero, Vermont. It’s very private here.”

He had a sexy way of talking. French Canadian accent, if she wasn’t mistaken. It was comforting, nonthreatening. Margery stretched as the healing sunbeams sank into her core.

“Your kidnappers have been brought to justice.”

They were more than kidnappers. In return for pimping Margery out to Champ, they had wanted him to turn a blind eye to their smuggling operation on his lake.

The doll!

Margery bolted upright and regretted it immediately. “Where is it?” she cried. The sun blinded her, but she didn’t care. She groped around with her hands.

“What?” he said, panic in his voice.

“The Smooshie.”

“What the hell is a—” Champ cut himself off and continued in a more polite tone. “I don’t understand, my Queen.”

Queen? Oh, right.

“The red dragon doll. I had it in my hand when you rescued me. It’s very important.”

“Uh, hold on. Let me check my truck.”

She heard him run.

Great. He probably thought she was an idiot looking for her little dolly.

Rubbing her eyes, Margery tried to stand up. But her legs refused to obey her, muscles trembling as she strained to rise.

The pirates had grabbed her when her camera’s flash malfunctioned and went off while she was taking pictures of their illicit activity—stuffing the dolls with drugs. When they saw her, they tried to kill her. If she’d been human, they would have. But when the bullets tore into her, she had instinctively shifted into her sky dragon form.

She’d only been a dragon for three weeks. Actually, she had always been a dragon, but an ancient curse had stopped her shift at puberty and blocked her dragon magic. When that curse was shattered, all the suppressed Queens shifted into their true forms. It took a lot of getting used to. The first week, all she did was cry and break things. The second week she flew around the world over and over again until sheer exhaustion claimed her. By the time the third week rolled around, Margery figured she’d better get over herself and return to her career as an investigative reporter.

Enjoy TO LOVE A WOLF by Paige Tyler

To Love a Wolf

(SWAT, #4)

Paige Tyler

Rating: 4.5*s

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Audience: Adult

Sensuality: Hot

Length: Novel

A Strong Hero

To Love a Wolf is a worthy addition to Paige Tyler's SWAT series. It's a solid read about an ex-military SWAT team member. Landry Cooper is the kind of strong, noble, sexy, larger-than-life character who makes a good hero.
Landry worked with explosive devices in the Army until he was blown up by one. This was the traumatic event that triggered his becoming a werewolf. He recovered, and now works for the Dallas PD SWAT, which is made up entirely of werewolves.

The One
Landry saves Everly in a bank robbery, and they hit it off.  It turns out that she is The One for him. Everly doesn't know that Landry is a werewolf, but her four brothers and father find out that he is. They try to kill him. If they feel that way, then what will happen when Everly finds out what Landry is?

Plenty of Suspense
There's plenty of suspense, some chuckles, and even a few tears.

The clever ending mirrors the beginning, but kind of in reverse and topsy-turvy.

WICKED BURN by Rebecca Zanetti is a Game-Changer

Wicked Burn

(Realm Enforcers, #3)

Rebecca Zanetti

Rating: 4.5*s

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Audience: Adult

Sensuality: Hot

Length: Novel

A witch and a demon …
No spoilers--which is going to make this review very difficult to write. So much is revealed and there are so many surprises that the book is a game-changer for the series.

I can safely tell you that the story is about Simone Brightston, a witch on the Coven Nine council, and Nicholai (as it's spelled in the ARC) Veis, a demon. Nick is the chief strategist for the Demon Nation, second to Zane Kyllwood (MARKED).

With a past
Simone and Nick have a history as a couple, and we finally learn about it in the beginning of this book. We find out what happened between them and why.

 Framed for treason
Fast forward to the present day, and Simone is wanted by the Coven Nine Guard so they can take her in to stand trial for treason. She's been framed for being involved in the mining of planekite, which is used to manufacture the drug Apollo. It's fatal to witches, who are targeted.

Nick's job throughout the book is to keep Simone safe and to act as her defense at the trial. Simone, being a strong, confident witch, feels she can keep herself safe and defend herself. It's a constant source of friction between them. All the while, Nick is busy reclaiming Simone as his own.

 Surprises and revelations
And now we come to all the surprises and revelations. The ones I can't tell you about. I'll just say that characters we know aren't who/what we think they are. Surprising new characters are introduced. Some characters will vow to die for each other, yet some alliances are shattered. The suspense never lets up.

And through it all there is a good dose of comic relief.

For fans of the series, we get to see favorite characters from the Realm Enforcers and Dark Protectors series.

To be continued …

While there is an HEA to the love story (this is a romance, after all), the suspense plot is not resolved. It's carried over into the next book, WICKED KISS. KISS is Adam and Tori's story, and I can't wait!

A bonus novella
After WICKED BURN, a novella is included about Cara and Talen, named TALEN.  Although I enjoyed reading about the Dark Protectors characters, I give TALEN just 3.5*s for its easy resolution.
